What is a GIS?
A GIS (Geographic Information System) is a technology field that incorporates geographic features with tabular data in order to map, analyze, and assess real-world problems. These features and their related data are stored in layers based on a common attribute. The layers are then combined in order to make decisions. What layers of information you combine depends on your purpose: finding the best location for a new store, analyzing environmental damage, viewing similar crimes in a city to detect a pattern, and so on.
The Fountain Sanitation District uses GIS to map and maintain information on sewer infrastructure, municipal boundaries, new construction, billing areas, parcel information (parcel lines, zoning, land use etc.), and more. The GIS is used to produce data and maps for meetings, planning, billing, presentations, and other staff needs.
